BELOVED - Golden Edition

Meet Lyndon and Louise. They met when they were 9 and 7. They began walking to school along the railroad tracks, both of them barefoot! Louise let Lyndon walk on the rails so he didn't hurt his feet on the rocks and splinters of the ties - he knew right then that she was the girl he would marry. Years later, they did indeed marry. And the stories they have to tell are hilarious and will warm your heart at the same time. Fast forward 60 years and many children and grandchildren later - what a beautiful story of love and loyalty that many will have to cherish.

It was a bit difficult to hold the camera still while we did this session, between the tears and laughter it was quite a feat. But, the entire time I kept saying to myself...this is what it's all about!! What a gift this would be not only to the BELOVED couples in the session, but to their children and grandchildren and even future generations. Every one of Lyndon and Louise's descendants should own this video. Lyndon and Louise are a true case of happily ever after. They are beautiful, their love is beautiful and anyone who watches this video will be moved by their deep rooted love and faith in God.

This BELOVED session would be such a treasured gift to give to anyone this Mother's Day -particularly the Golden Edition series that we have begun, I honestly can't imagine a more perfect gift for everyone to give to our Grandmothers this season. Surfer Wedding

Stephen and Jen's wedding this weekend in San Clemente was almost a photography brain overload. They thought of every detail and every detail happened to be the best photo op ever! First, these surfers took their entire bridal party for a paddle out prayer circle that morning, with matching rash guards announcing their pending nuptuals - of course to complete the morning pictures, Jen wore a garter in her surf gear and Stephen a red bow tie. Could they be any more fun??

The rest of the day was spent in San Clemente style checking out all the local hot spots and posing here and there for a quick pic. It made for such a fast paced, fun day. My husband got to tag along for this wedding and that made it more fun since that doesn't happen very often. Jen actually played on my husband's Bakersfield College soccer team 10 years ago! So, it was a personal event as well as a work day and it just so happened to be our 15 year anniversary weekend...all in all, pretty perfect!

I have great hopes for this couple who share so many of the same passions in life. Thanks for letting us be a part of your special day, we were honored to be there as your photographer and as your friend!

Misty Dameron Photography, Biggest Loser Style!

Got to spend Sunday afternoon with Shay Sorrels from the Biggest Loser Season 8 and we had such a great time. We actually burned quite a few calories as well! Our photoshoot took place at Back Bay Natural Reserve in Newport Beach and we walked a good two miles together. Fortunately I had nice sensible shoes for walking, but Shay broke some cute three inch heels on our walk! She's such a trooper though, finished the walk broken shoes and all! But it was worth it, we saw some great wildflowers and fun scenery there. Shay is one of the most inspiring people you could ever meet, she just shines from the inside out. And from a photography standpoint, she is so naturally photogenic, it's really hard to take a bad picture of her...then you get her laughing and it's a done deal! Love that girl and I am so proud of her. Can't wait to see her at the end of Season 9. Keep an eye out for more images from our fun session together.

my BELOVED Continued (the longer version)

These BELOVED sessions are so on my heart right now, I just feel the need to dialogue a bit more about them. I think THIS IS THE PROJECT I've been searching for in my years as a photographer.

Most of the portraits or even candid photographs that are taken, in everyone's family, happen at key moments in our life (as they should)...our wedding day, our birthdays, the birth of our children and their birthdays and so on. This is what we document and look back on as "our life." At our funeral someday, these will be the images that will linger in a slideshow or in frames around the house of future generations long after we're gone.

But, to me, it seems that the majority of our life was really lived in between these monumental events in the everyday relationships that took place. If you've been with me long, you're saying, yeah, heard it before Misty...and that's true -- I've always been more interested in photography of the everyday. BUT, have we chronicled our love story throughout the years as well? Don't we want our grandchildren and great grandchildren in the future to know where it all started? Don't we want our love to be chronicled as well? And not just on our wedding day.

I am always intrigued at the differences in people's relationships that I have the pleasure of photographing. The camera does not lie (photoshop does though! - a little photographic humor), but the rawness of relationships really comes out when I'm doing any kind of shoot where relationships are in the mix. It frequently brings me to tears to photograph a couple who has been together 5, 10, 50 years and has seen it all - the good, bad and ugly. But that's where the unconditional love lies. Yes, wedding days are priceless and the wide eyes of wonder are exhilarating, but to photograph two souls who have been together for years and years and connect on so many levels is deep. To capture that authentic, nothin' but real moments that two people share is awesome and yet humbling.

So, that's what BELOVED is all about. Really telling the story that exists...not posing. It's not actually a photoshoot, it's an EXPERIENCE. It's actually an invitation for you to connect or perhaps reconnect with each other. It's an invitation to experience joy in each others presence, not to smile and look at the camera for a beautifully lit portrait. In fact, where this session takes place would hardly matter. The scenery is not even noticeable, coordinating clothes are not necessary. All that's required is that you bring yourself and your beloved and be willing to accept whatever experience it may bring...and that's enough.

I realize this may seem too intimate, too vulnerable (especially for you testosterone folk) - but I promise within 5 minutes of the session, you will relax and enjoy the session. In the end, you will walk away feeling more in love, more in awe of that person, more aware of the relationship that exists, more in touch with what God has given you than you were before the session. And as a bonus, you will have unique and amazing images that you and your family will cherish for a lifetime.

I really feel that God has placed this on my heart for this time in my life. I hope that THESE are the images that are at our funerals, the ones that show the true love stories that we have.

Bakersfield New England Style

Every year I spend about as much time at Hart Park as I do at home, and every year I say "this is way more beautiful than last year." And while I do have memory issues lately (old age I suppose), I think it's an exceptional year for Fall colors. Everyone needs at least one family portrait in the Fall foliage. While I'm a very big fan of thinking outside the box when it comes to portraits, "Fall pics" is just one of those things you've just got to do at least once!

I'm going to be out at Hart park this Saturday and Sunday (November 14-15), as well as the Saturday after Thanksgiving (November 28). Then, one more weekend out there December 5-6--so one of those has GOT to work into your schedule!

These families were just taken yesterday afternoon and this morning, so this is currently how amazing it looks out there. You'll be able to see the rest of their images next week sometime on my website. Deadlines to order for Christmas cards and gifts delivered by Christmas is December 11, so schedule those shoots before it's too late!

So Cal Beaches still the best

Now that I'm a transplanted OC to Bakersfield girl, it seems that the central coast is the place to go for a family beach day (and a beach photography session). I've learned my way around Pismo, Morro Bay, Paso and even Cambria and yes they are stunningly gorgeous. But, after this weekend's beach shoot at Newport Coast, I realized that I still feel most comfortable shooting in my old backyard. The fresh, blue sky and the smoothness where the sand and water meet was home to me...sigh. Now, if we could just do away with the traffic that stands (literally) between here and there!

The Schonauer family made that trek this weekend and it was so much fun playing in the sand and water. These two girls were about as cute as they come in little white dresses. I won't be making another trip down (or to the central coast beaches either) until the new year, but if you like this look let's talk and make a plan for the New Year.

Christmas Card Time!

Can't believe it's actually November, time to get going on all those Christmas cards. If you had a shoot this past year, I can repost your images so you can order your Christmas cards. My cards range in style and price depending on the look you'd like and budget you have to work with.

My custom Christmas cards are so much fun (if I do say so myself!). The three most popular are the 5x7 postcard style, the 5x7 fold over card and the fun 5x5 tri-fold card. Take a look at these images to see what style you like best. The fun thing about these is that you can use multiple images with some of the fun stuff we shot. The press printed cards are $3 and $4 with an art fee of $25 (waived if you purchased a portrait collection).

Who Knew???

Who knew cotton could be so beautiful or that a junkyard could produce so many colors? Still on the constant mission to find new places to shoot in Bakersfield and what I'm finding is, I've barely scraped the surface. Three recent engagement shoots are proof. Most recently we went hiking with Richard and Amanda through the Southwest weeds to find some awesome crops that made for great pics. Bailey and Jessica as well as Will and Shanna trusted us enough to shoot them at a junkyard and none of us were disappointed with what we found. I loved it so much, this is where I'm going to do my own kids' Christmas card pics, so watch for those later! Lastly, with adorable couple Mike and Kelli we wanted a new twist on a traditional spot. Hart Park, although it's easy to fall into the same type shoots since I shoot out there so often--we went this day with fresh eyes and found some fun new spots to shoot.

Engagement shoots have become some of my favorite types of shooting, because creativity is a front runner and my couples have been so much fun to explore with. Kudos guys!

Happy Halloween Customer Appreciation

Well in the hustle and bustle of the Fall, I love the little break that we get called Halloween--a time to reflect on how my little ones are seeming to be less and less little every year. This year was the hardest yet on choosing a costume for my 10 year old boy. It seems there are aisles and aisles of cute costumes for girls, but when it comes to boys--not so much. Once they are out of the superhero/pirate phase...what then? I practically punched the teenage boy who worked at Party City the other day for calling me out on being a dull mom because I wouldn't let my 10 year old son be a scary monster with guts hanging out. Sorry, guess I'm old fashioned in some ways. I actually told my son at Party City to feel free and "google yourself a new mom when you get home." Ha!

That tangent aside, I am so fortunate to have great professional portraits every year of my kids in their costumes. Lucky for me, my professional photographer travels with me always. So this year, I thought I wish I could do this for all my clients! And so, why not? This year to say thank you, I'm opening up my studio for my clients who have done a Fall session with me this year (or are booked to do one) from 4-5 on Halloween night. It'll be just a quick session each, but at least we can capture a few precious moments that we will remember forever. After Halloween, I will mail 4x6s of the best shots. So, let me know if you'd like to join in the fun. Tell the kids this is the first candy stop of the evening (I'll be sure to have my candy jar stocked!). Purple Mountains Majesty

Well, definitely the most scenic wedding I've ever shot. The first part of September my assistant Stephanie and I had the privilege of driving to Aspen Colorado to shoot my beautiful cousin, Christy's wedding. We decided not to do it the easy way and fly, no we opted to drive an RV out to Colorado. I really wanted my kids to go and meet some family that we don't get to see much, so they went with me. Bakersfield's fun, but as far as scenery goes--it's a little...well...dry. But Aspen Colorado, hello??? Amazing. The RV aspect of it made it just a fun whole week, with lots of photojournalism involved. Actually I gave my 7 year old daughter a camera to photojournal the behind the scenes shots! She got some great stuff and plenty of not-so-great, unflattering shots that I pray you will never see.

The wedding day was due to have thunderstorms off and on and of course if that had happened the mountain top wedding that was planned would have been derailed. It was an amazing day however as we watched the clouds perfectly make their way around the outskirts of Buttermilk mountain--making the wedding dreams a reality. The scenery was majestic, the bride and groom stunning, and to top it off the chair lift with guests covered in red blankets was crazy fun. All in all, it couldn't have been a more picture perfect wedding. Here's a few shots that I'm not even sure do the day justice, but they were some of my favorites. After the wedding we really did ride down the mountain on a ski lift. I actually learned to ski on this actual mountain when I was 12, so that brought back some nice memories for me as I remembered trees on which I nearly cracked my skull. Stephanie was quite the trooper on this lift, as she is a little height phobic, but she rose beyond her fears and I think the high is always a little sweeter when it follows sheer terror.

So, would I love to be a world traveling wedding photographer? Absolutely! How does that one begin that, I have no idea. But for now, I love our humble little town and the people that fill it-- however, I would happily rise to the occasion of escaping our 100 degree town to do more destination weddings. But really, it's all an adventure and I wouldn't trade my life for anything.

No wonder this is so much fun!

Here are three very different weddings, thick with color and characters. They could not be any more different from each other. Stephen and Alaina got married the end of August at Seven Oaks--which never disappoints. Alaina was game for just about anything when it came to posing. She layed on top of the table for a few priceless portraits--even hung upside down in an armchair! The boys, well we won't mention what they wanted to do for their portraits! Then there was Luis and Brittney who got married at Valley Baptist. The church sanctuary was beautiful, but we really had a blast with this fun car that we got to use as a prop throughout the day. Made for some fun stuff, especially when we went downtown with this awesome couple for a few unique photos. The remainder of their images will be up this weekend!

Lastly, but certainly not least was Shad and Misty's wedding in downtown Bakersfield. Their wedding was on top of a parking garage--no kidding. And it was breathtaking as the sun went down behind the Padre Hotel. It was a warm day in Bakersfield (really unusual I know), but the breeze was so nice. We did all our pictures downtown before heading to the Metro Gallery for the reception. There's a few more images to preview on my website, but the rest will be up in two weeks.

My Sister

She needs her own separate entry. My middle sister made the trek down the aisle in August! I officially have a brother! We put this wedding together in a little over a month and it was, in my humble opinion, stunning. Thanks to Natanya (our youngest sis) and our 4th honorary sister Jamie (and a slew of others), we turned a Los Angeles backyard garden into a Moroccan palace. The evening could not have been more relaxed and magical. The night was made complete with the Left Over Cuties band playing into the cool evening. So, how exactly did I photograph this wedding? Well, I sort of didn't. Amanda and Ryan Frank, good friends and amazing photographers themselves came to help us out. The wedding images are on my website, if you'd like to check them out. PS. So apparently in the grand scheme of life, something's got to give. It's been a busy year indeed. I can't believe we're headed into the final quarter of the year. For those of you who are regular Facebookers, you've been able to follow our journeys over the summer--but now I've got to get back to the blogging world. I have put it off because I feel like there's too much I need to write about. My husband has convinced me just to start where I'm at now. So, here's a few highlights of our summer--then we're back on track with the Fall!

Nightmare on My Street

I had this crazy dream last night that I had a blog, a place to keep the world up to date with my fun photoshoots and amazing couples on their wedding day. A blog where I could document all the cool places I'm seeing and the beautiful world that is surrounding us...then I logged onto my computer and realized it was no nightmare just a not-so-gentle reminder to me to get myself back on the computer and document away. So, although I've been asleep in the virtual blogging world, I have not been asleep in the photography world. I'm probably going to have to pass by many fun portrait sessions I have had--but for the sake of playing catch up and starting again, I am going to just stick to my weddings. I have too much fun stuff I've been doing not to relay some of it! So, back in the saddle...here we go!

The Circle

As most of you know, I love telling a good story. This is what makes my life so fulfilling, not only watching my own family's story play out but yours as well. Weddings are so much fun, but what is even greater is getting to photograph the new babies that follow those weddings. These past couple weeks I had the privelege of seeing two such stories in action. Both couples have boys with great names and they are both sooo adorable. Meet Micah (Andrew and Kelsey Spradlin) and Levi (Jonathan and Kayley Price). Here's a couple images, but you can see the rest on my website. I have a lot of faith in both these young families, they are good people in the stitching of their makeup and I saw first hand how great these parents are going to be. Good job guys!

Greenfitti Jungle

I'm a little behind on blogging (surprise surprise), but I wanted to go back and highlight this hike we did in LA. My sister has been doing this hike for a while and from her pictures I knew it was somewhere I wanted to visit with all of my equipment. So a couple weeks ago when I was down in OC for some shoots, I decided it was time to make that 3 hour hike. What an amazing place! I'm not allowed to give specifics on where this location is, but I'd like to describe it to you as a place where the Garden of Eden meets West Side Story; where graffiti is not only acceptible but part of the allure. It was almost too much for a three hour time period. I plan to go back with different eyes.

In addition to my amazing sister, we invited three actors to take the hike and I was worried about that being too many, but now I wish we'd taken more and so wish we had taken at least one girl! So, I'm making a list for the next times I visit. I've decided that I would like to go back there once with a senior (boy and girl), once with the right engaged couple, once with a dancer or several dancers, another time with two little girls in white dresses, maybe once with a little boy in overalls and his favorite pet, for sure once with an entire band or orchestra, and I have to go once with my photographer friends for play date and oh yeah my own family for a picnic. It holds so many different possibilities. There's so many spots to shoot there, not just the graffiti art. Then to finish off the hike, the plush meadows and running creek are almost overwhelming to the senses.

The hike was finished with perfection: A huge orange tree free for the taking which made me smile to think that God also took that hike with us. It does remind me of what life must have been like before we desecrated much of the beautiful land God gave us. But, I know that the earth will return to this beautiful state someday and I can't wait to introduce my children to it.

Love Bakersfield Style

If you love Bakersfield, it doesn't get any better than this. A ranch with horses and goats, wagon wheels, high weeds, rusted metal--ah I love the smell of rusted metal in the morning. Ha ha. Honestly, I could shoot this kind of location anytime or at least until the cows come home. Anthony and Ashleigh are one of those couples that every photographer falls in love with. Absolutely adorable and so in love--very easy to photograph. We had a lot of fun last weekend tromping through these dusty trails letting creativity be in charge. Love is in the Air

This is the season of LOVE right before the season of WEDDINGS. I love this time of year in Bakersfield, chilly air and scattered rain to keep the skies clear. My last three Engagement shoots have been such great fun! I can't wait til these weddings, which are right around the corner. For these shoots, we took to the great outdoors:

Stephen and Alaina we simply hit the beautiful agriculture in Southwest Bakersfield where the grass is as high as an elephant's eye--not really, but close enough.

Carlos and Lindsay we took to the almond orchards where the blooms are bursting. This blooming season is coming to an end quickly! We also got the edgier side of the orchards, at the railroad tracks--this is always so much fun for me, especially when you have a couple willing to get a little dirty with train oil!

Then Robert and JulieAnn--we had a lot of fun in my old stomping grounds. Back to Costa Mesa at Back Bay Natural Reserve--I used to walk it in college and was so in love with it (when my allergies could handle it). I always remembered it fondly and wondered how a photoshoot would do there, well now I know. The yellow wildflowers were only more perfect when JulieAnn showed up in an adorable yellow sundress! Crazy coincidence? It was perfect.

Daddy's Girl

This one was a little more than just a photoshoot. I was there as a mom watching her adorable two daughters have a blast with the best date in the world--their daddy. Patriot Elementary had it's annual PTC Daddy-Daughter Dance last Friday and the girls and their poodle skirts flooded the cafeteria. I was equally impressed with many of the letterman's jackets and chuck's worn by the dads. A good time all around. The "buddy" pictures were some of my favorites, little girls giddy with their best friends. You can check out the pics on my website for a couple weeks. So much fun!

The Calm Between the Storms

We've seen our fair share of rain these past two weeks, and I love every minute of it. But the greatest thing is the amazing skies between these storms. Sometimes it's easy to forget that we are surrounded by mountains here in Bakersfield! But right now, with this beautiful air we can hardly see anything else. Snow capped mountains and clouds that are every photographers dream. Last week, we did two engagement shoots between such storms and the skies make the pictures, well so do the cute couples in the pictures.

Justin and Corinne, Nick and Diana are not only great physical subjects for photoshoots, but they are such great people to the core! We had so much fun with both these couples. Nick and Megan Wedding

One of the most adorable and compatible couples you'll ever meet! We loved every minute of your special day. You really can't go wrong with St. Francis and Stockdale Country Club, but everything seemed so smooth the whole day. Our favorite time was rockin' out during our posed portion of the day. Your IPod workout music really made us get in the groove quicker than ever! So much so, that I think I'll start suggesting that to future brides. Aside from the fact that my own kids' names are Zack and Kate, this Zach and Katie made last Saturday an entire day filled with joy. You'll never see a more laid back couple on their wedding day! They really trusted us, and all their vendors actually, to make their day run smoothly. I can't tell you how much of a difference that makes! We had so much fun, feeling the groove as we shot our way through the day. The bridal party was as fun as they were beautiful, so photographing them could have easily been an all day event. Nothing short of a blast!

I don't think we could have had much more fun than we had this weekend in Huntington Beach. The wedding and posed stuff was great, but this reception at Silvera's was awesome!! It was just the best setting for pictures with so much great window light and cool architecture. Then the crowd, which I swear Jeff and Tammy hired to make their party more fun, was so great! Even the 8 month pregnant swing dancing mama! But the highlight of the reception was towards the end, with an entire Turbo Kick Boxing class showing up in workout gear, led by one bride in white who was kicking and jumping higher than any of them! It was fabulous to say the least. There's a few more shots on my website, the rest will be up in a few weeks.

Thanks Jeff and Tammy. I felt very trusted by you and that makes so much of a difference when trying to be creative. Thanks for letting my inner creativity come out to play! I know you'll be so happy with the results!

Like a good wine...

The mixing of two different wines was the metaphor used in place of the traditional unity candle and it couldn't have been more perfect or in a more beautiful setting. Lang and Amanda tied the knot last week at his parents house and it was a perfect pairing. We enjoyed both families and had so much fun capturing this day for you. Pure, Simple, Breathtaking

There are few things in this world that are as stunningly beautiful as a pregnant mother. Nothing shows more love, more beauty than a portrait of a mother to be especially when you mix it with her precious family. If you read my blog a couple weeks ago about my new favorite way to photograph newborns in a much more journalistic way, you knew this posting was coming. My last couple maternity shoots have been done the same way. This shoot was 100% available light. I did bring my flash/softbox to the shoot in case I needed to cheat, but I didn't use it. And because it was so much less obtrusive than all that equipment in my studio, I got to move more where the action progressed to and I got real emotion from everyone including their two year old! Not to mention that this is so much more real. Real real life. This is how I want to proceed for my maternity and newborn shoots as much as possible. I know this is not always practical, so obviously I will still shoot in my studio. But I love it, it is so creatively inspiring for me. You can't see the rest of their shoot since it's a little more personal, so their proofs are hidden. But, this gives you a taste of this type of shooting. If you are an expectant mother and would like to schedule an artistic consultation for a shoot like this, call me.

The Horse Whisperer

Well, Lizzie certainly fits the bill as a horse whisperer as far as I'm concerned. She's calm, soft spoken and very in control of that horse. Well, Wanda had apparently had enough for the day. Thank goodness we got some amazing shots before she decided to feel the wind whistling through her mane. Wanda spent much of that day winning awards at the Kern County fair, and apparently wasn't in the mood for much a photoshoot later in the day. Towards the end of our shoot, she decided enough was enough and she took off!! Sometimes I think a photographer's life would make a great reality series. This would have made a hilarious episode. Cool hand Lizzie running through Hart Park, trying to get a handle on Wanda who was wearing no bridle (of course not, the pictures are much prettier without one!). But all's well that ends well and we all had some great laughs to boot. I don't think Lizzie's senior pics would have been nearly as meaningful without her trusted companion Wanda. Thanks for the memories Clantons!

Newborn Moments

The last few newborn shoots, I've shifted my thinking a bit. I wanted to share it with my blog readers, because I know there's thousands of you...Yes, of course I love the controlled light of my studio and black backdrop that makes everything look so perfect and dramatic. But what I'm really finding more meaningful and pure is shooting next to a window in the surroundings of their own home. There's always going to be some window that will work perfectly, we'll scout it out first of course. But the babies have been so much more comfortable in their own environment, with familiar smells, comfortable colors and their special nursing chair. The moms have been equally as comfortable not stressing out about time and loading the car with everything they think they might need...that special blanket, heirloom rattle, pacifiers, Grandmas handkerchief, the christening gown, you name it. So having these shoots at their own home has made everything so much easier and less stressful for everyone. And as a photographer and from a completely selfish point of view, I love what I'm getting!! First, it's different, and creatively I can be unique with new surroundings that I've never shot in before. Then, as you see from these images of Kendra, you cut out anything artificial and what you get is pure...pure...pure...beauty.

On a separate note, I'm moving this direction for my maternity shoots now too...watch for future postings on that topic!

Sometimes a photographer, such as me, gets this amazing, adorable couple who love each other so much and have so much fun together and are so cute just hanging out ...it just makes that photographer smile from ear to ear. That is how I feel about Nick and Megan, with her infectious smile with perfect teeth and his rosy cheeks and sparkly eyes--you just can't go wrong! I know it's going to be an amazing wedding that I'm so looking forward to! Thanks guys for a fun day at Hart Park, can't wait til the wedding.

Grad Season

It's that wonderful time of year, seniors with a bad case of senior-itis making their final debut in their high schools for one last time. Bakersfield Christian High School seems to have put out some great students over the years! And this year is no exception. I'm so blessed to meet such amazing families whose children attend this wonderful school. Vinnie is a one such talented student. He'll graduate this Spring. This Saturday's wedding was nothing short of stunning. With the exception of an occasional bead of sweat from the Bakersfield heat, the day was flawless. The wedding itself was at St. Phillips and the reception and most of our pictures were at Bakersfield Country Club. The reason I am a photographer is because I love to tell stories. (I'm sure you've all heard this before from me, but let me digress). I love the individual families that make up those stories; I love their uniqueness as a family; I love the characters that come to life in their stories; I love the history that envelopes those stories. It is such a great honor to help chronicle these stories for families. I feel it's one of my strengths as a photographer. Last week it was my honor to meet and photograph five generations of women, the youngest -10 days old and the most seasoned -in her mid 80s. Our vacation time is coming to a close...but we've got great pics to show where we've been this summer. My family had some much needed time off in the Sequoias at Kings Canyon for a few days. And aside from quite a bit of rainfall, it was perfect. Actually I think the rain made it perfect. It was so nice to be away from 100 degree weather and actually be misted on constantly. Then we stole away with some friends to Lake Nacimiento for a few days as well. The kids got to try their hand at water skiing of sorts. Look at Syd go! We love our yearly trip to Nacimiento! But now, alas, it is time to get back to work...

I'm sure we all had similar evenings last night...the smell of sulfur, the retina-burning strobes, the whizzing, ear splitting screams, the jolting pops of illegal fireworks down the block...ahh-- it's so great to be an American. My three little ones, of course, had the best time last night. I thought about just enjoying the moment and watching them, but I decided "naah, I'll watch through the lens!" In my family we have a saying, "if it wasn't captured on film, then it didn't really happen." Here's a couple shots of my fire dancers. Feel free to post your own. I'd love to see yours too.

Bakersfield Beach

Huh? Yep, as close as you can get to a Bakersfield Beach. I was a bit surprised myself, being from Orange County. But Lake Ming yesterday was perfect--calm waters, breezy, private. Great way to spend an afternoon. Shaun and Kimberly Romans and their adorable Olivia enjoyed some family time in the waters. I got to be the fly on the wall to their lives for the afternoon. It was a lot of fun and we got some great shots. I will definitely be returning here for a "quicker than Paso" beach shoot. Last weekend, we hit the road and left 105 degree Bakersfield and cooled off in the 102 degree Chowchilla metropolis for Pete and Sheri's wedding, and what a blast we had! If you scroll down a bit you'll see Courtney's senior pics, well we got the whole family in on the photographs last weekend since Courtney's mom tied the knot to an amazing man named Pete. We loved them both and are thrilled for the beginning of their new life together. A few images are posted already, but you'll see the rest the end of July. Thank you so much Sheri and Pete for letting us share this most special day with you. We LOVE Chowchilla (and the outlets on the way home).

String Theory Amazing Ensemble

I really don't expect this blog will do justice in describing this amazing group of musicians that I had the privelege of photographing in Santa Barbara last Thursday. I've mentioned before that my sister Natanya Marks is booking a musical group called String Theory. Well, I finally had the honor of hearing them and now photographing this group. I'm not capable of the eloquence needed to portray to you what type of experience you will have when you witness their performance. They must have dozens of instruments, ranging from a 30 foot harp to a percussion wall, and it seems that they are all capable of playing all of them! But they don't stop with music, their harpists also do interpretive dance. The ensemble feeling is attained as the dancers float out into the audience to perform as well, so the fourth wall between the audience and musicians is broken and invites the audience to be part of this unique experience. It really was amazing. If you haven't heard of String Theory before, I can guarantee this will not be the last time you hear of them. They will go far, mark my words. Creative Assignment #1

I guess it's my first assignment, at least officially. I've decided to give myself creative assignments to make me reach outside of my comfort zone of photography. It's actually my husband's idea, he's my gumption coach. Of course I've always known that in order to continue growing in my creativity, I will always need to be challenged.

Animals have never been all that interesting of a subject for me (I prefer two legged creatures), but I took my kids to the LA zoo on Friday and although my three kids were just about the cutest monkeys there, I got a couple other shots as well. This King of the Jungle shot was pretty awesome and I just happened to catch the full teeth shot--ouch! The giraffe, I'm pretty sure, had a crush on me and stared at me the entire time we were near his neighborhood. And finally, the zebra's coat is just, to me, an amazing testimony to our God's creativity. The other little monkey with freckles was just too cute not to post. So, just thought I'd let you see a little taste of my first self improvement assignment.

Feel free to give me suggestions on my next assignment. I need some help coming up with new ideas. What I'd like is to be given labels to go off: like a certain color, emotion, category, occupation--whatever...you name it. Join the party and brainstorm.

Karissa graduates from Monterey Bay Academy

What a weekend! Sunburned and pretty exhausted, but enriched nonetheless! My husband and I had the opportunity to travel to the Santa Cruz area for one of my favorite Bakersfield families. Karissa Torres graduated this weekend from Monterey Bay Acacademy in La Selva Beach. I was priveleged to be able to photograph her and twelve other graduates that day. A Morning at Hart Park with the Sleggers Family

My normal shooting spot at Hart Park was under sprinkler attack, so we ventured out. Just like sitting in the same pew at church, I tend to get comfortable in my "spots". Hart Park is like my second home for much of the year, so it was a test of creativity to find a completely different spot to shoot! And the result, amazing! (If I do say so myself :). The Sleggers family is beautiful on the outside, but I think it's their inner beauty as a family that made this shoot so successful. I've known this client for 31 years now and I think, although I'm sure I'm biased, she's the most beautiful woman I've ever had the privelege of photographing--inside and out. And, yes, she's single. She lives in Venice Beach and is an actress, documentary film maker and the producer and booking agent of String Theory, the most amazing musical experience ever. Rio Bravo Wedding - sweltering, but beautiful!

Yes, two weddings this weekend in 100 degree weather! But the weddings went off without a hitch. Ryan and Shelly's wedding was absolutely beautiful! Well, not exactly tulips, but blue verbina doesn't really "alliterate" with toddler. But look at this munchkin so chewable. 11 month old Sophia Fullenweider in lush garden setting. Rules of Engagement ...

Gone are the days when engagement pictures have to look just so. Beautiful lush backgrounds and smiling, happy couples are still gorgeous, but having the opportunity to photograph a couple who just want to play--that's priceless. Photoshoots like Nick and Loren remind me of how blessed I am to do what I do. It was such a freeing feeling to to be able to try just about anything, like we did last night. Personality of the couple definitely comes into play. They have to work well together and allow each other the freedom to be themselves and what you get as the end product is amazing. I think we officially logged about 3 miles up and back, but it was well worth it! Just when you think you're so tired, there was a tremendously steep hill to slide down. Of course, I'm the one who found the loose spot and slid down a little faster than I intended. Anything for the shot!
